Your tips If you can get away from Tokyo travel to places such as Kyoto and experience the world famous Shinkansen (bullet train).
As we were visiting relatives sight-seeing was a secondary consideration. However, we did spend a weekend in Kyoto, the former capital of Japan. It is a centre of Zen Buddhism and has many temples and shrines. A feature of these places is the gardens which are very beautiful and offer a haven of peace from the hustle and bustle of the streets. The Gion is another area of old Japan and has many excellent restaurants. Kyoto station itself is in total contrast to the historic areas and is a good example of modern Japan embracing many restaurants and a huge department store.
Tokyo itself is a huge metropolis with an excellent public transport system. Shopping is excellent. There are many good middle of the road restaurants. We particularly enjoyed French 'boulangerie' type coffee shops as a break from Japanese food.
