Your tips Visit Amsterdam by all means and if you don't like seedy tourist centers just go to the museums. Then visit the many other fine cities and towns in the Netherlands
Our flight was to Amsterdam but we did not stay there, thankfully. A one day visit to Amsterdam was enough. The museums are first class but the general tone of the city is very seedy and even dirty - so unDutch. We spent most of our time in Leiden with day trips to other centers. Pound for pound Leiden has Amsterdam beat, hands down. This city is a more manageable size and has more fine Museums for it's size than anywhere. Leiden has the oldest university in the Netherlands, is the birthplace of Rembrandt and where the first tulips were grown in the Netherlands. It's a vibrant, classey and livable city - unlike Amsterdam.
